California is moving aggressively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with a target of 30% reduction below “business as usual” emissions by 2020. This positive direction has gained increased urgency and momentum in the last year due to the economic recession, a drastic increase in the number of foreclosures, and President Obama’s infrastructure stimulus package. This newfound emphasis coupled with the current national climate offers significant opportunity for interested partners in the community to take front stage in developing programs/services that effectively address the needs of the community.
Our goal with the Green Center initiative is to position interested partners within the community to effectively integrate existing low income energy conservation programs and job training programs with the green movement. Each Green Center will serve as a conduit for connecting the community with the green movement.
The Green Centers allow co-located partners within the community to integrate low income energy conservation and renewable energy initiatives, education and job training programs. The Green Center acts as a hub for energy-efficiency education and outreach, appliance replacement programs and establish “green learning laboratories” that will be used to train and place low-income individuals into high-growth jobs. Multiple partners ensure community wide engagement and success and establish a true pathway for those hoping to pursue success within the green economy.
